Your Guide to Welcome Week Weekend
Welcome to Penn State, first year and change of campus students! The Office of Student Orientation & Transition Programs has a lot in store for you all beginning on Friday, August 19th. We picked out some of the best things for you to do during this year’s Welcome Week weekend:
Friday, August 19th
Friday Night Lights with Women’s Soccer
If there’s one thing you need to know about our Penn State women’s soccer team, it’s that they are really really good. The Nittany Lions are coming off of a stellar 2015 season winning the NCAA championship. Come out and hang with their student section, the Park Avenue Army as the team takes on West Virginia at 7:30pm on Jeffrey Field. Better yet, the first 500 students get a free t-shirt and pizza.
Saturday, August 20
LGBTQA Student Resource Center Open House
Starting at 9am, students have the chance to visit the campus LGBTQA Student Resource Center. There, you can visit the staff and student interns plus find information on how to get involved with the various activities and clubs on campus.
Campus & Downtown Tours
Tour guides will be around to show students what downtown State College has to offer as well as get the chance figure out where their classes are for the fall semester with campus tours. For students who live in Pollock Commons, this will take place from 1pm until 2:30pm (Meet outside of “The Mix”), and for East Hall students, the tours begin at 2:00pm until 3:30pm (Meet at the East Halls Volleyball Courts).
President’s New Student Convocation
Although this event is mandated for all first-year students, it’s definitely a really fun event that happens every year. Students will have a chance to be officially welcomed to Penn State by the university president, college deans, and more. In addition, convocation typically has a few student clubs perform. Before convocation, be sure to pick up your free t-shirt of your academic college that should wear to the event. You can find out where to pick up your t-shirts here. Convocation begins at 7:45pm at the Bryce Jordan Center. Be sure to head to the HUB after for the president’s welcome reception at 9pm and LateNight.
The first LateNight of the year kicks-off Saturday night from 9pm until 1am. Come to the HUB to enjoy free food, a comedy show, music, crafts and more.
Sunday, August 21
Change-of-Campus Student Welcome
For students that are coming from a different campus, the university requires that you attend this event. Check-in begins at 8am, and students will be able to get tips from and meet Penn State staff and faculty plus meet new students.
College Dean’s Meetings
This is a chance for you to meet everyone in your academic college plus learn about campus resources within your college. The full list of college dean meeting times and locations can be found here.
Multicultural Student Orientation
This event is put on by the Paul Robeson Cultural Center and the Multicultural Resource Center as a chance for diverse students to meet with academic support while enjoying a good meal. The event kicks off at Heritage Hall in the HUBE-Robeson Center at 5:30pm.
Be a Part From The Start
Taking place in Rec Hall every year, Be a Part From The Start is chance for incoming students to learn all about Penn State traditions. There will be appearances from the Nittany Lion, cheerleaders, the Blue band and possibly a few Penn State coaches. This is an event you don’t want to miss. Be sure to come out to Rec Hall at 8pm!
