SPA Fall 2016 Distinguished Speaker Series

The Student Programming Association (SPA) has released their distinguished speaker series for Fall 2016. This year’s speakers are well known, inspiring, and knowledgeable. Students are bound to enjoy what these speakers have to say and share with the Penn State community.

RJ Mitte – Sept. 28, Alumni Hall. 

RJ Mitte is best known for his role as Walt “Flynn” White Jr. in the Netflix original series Breaking Bad. Mitte is an actor, producer, and model who has had roles in Hannah Montana, Dixieland, Who’s Driving Doug, House of Last Things and upcoming movie Triumph. Mitte is diagnosed with cerebral palsy which is marked by impaired muscle coordination but hasn’t slowed him down one bit while reaching his dreams throughout his life. Mitte will be speaking in Alumni Hall September 28th.

Gloria Steinem – Nov. 2, Schwab Auditorium

Gloria Steinem is a writer, lecturer, political activist, and feminist organizer. She co-founded Ms. Magazine in 1972 and was an editor for 15 years but is currently a consulting editor. She has produced a documentary on child abuse for HBO and has been a subject of profiles on Lifetime and Showtime. She has written several books such as Marilyn: Norma Jean, on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Steinem is also a leader in the fight for equality by helping establish the Women’s Action Alliance and the National Women’s Political Caucus. Steinem will be speaking in Schwab Auditorium November 2nd.

George Takei – Nov. 17, Eisenhower Auditorium

George Takei is best known for is role of Mr. Sulu in the television series Star Trek. Takei has been in countless movies, shows, and wrote many books with his career spanning five decades. He developed an epic story of love, family and heroism called Allegiance which has won multiple awards and was followed by a Broadway run in 2015-2016. Now a community activist Takei serves as a chair of the council of governors of East West Players, the nation’s foremost Asian Pacific American theater. Takei will be speaking in Eisenhower Auditorium November 17th.

SPA has already impressed this fall at the Nittany Block Party and this year’s fall events are sure to be exciting as well.
