Contributor Descriptions

Staff Writers (News, Culture, Music, Tech)

Staff writers contribute articles on a regular basis (weekly and sometimes even more). They work closely with senior staff to generate content consistent with the mission of the Underground while also working with their editors to tell untold stories within the Penn State Community. 

General Eligibility:

  • Must be in good standing with the University
  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student at University Park
  • Must submit a complicated application

Other Criteria:

  • Has good organizational skills
  • Attention-to-detail
  • Able to handle a variety of tasks
  • Able to help brainstorm and execute ideas
  • Help to maintain a level of openness on reporting on various personal posts about student’s life
  • Must be willing to work on late (emphasis), short, and tight deadlines

Editor (News, Culture, Music, Tech,Photo)

As an editor a candidate must be able to work with all members of the Executive Board, especially the Editor-In-Chief, while also ensuring that the organization properly communicates university, local, state, and national news correspondence. In addition, editors are responsible for managing  writers, assisting the Editor-in-chief in day-to-day operations, and helping writers to ensure the factual evidence that is being presented is accurate and grammatically correct. This member must maintain a level of professionalism while also being able to work with various levels of leadership.

General Eligibility:

  • Must submit a complicated application
  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student at University Park
  • Must be in good standing with the University

Other Criteria:

  • Has good organizational skills
  • Attention-to-detail
  • Able to handle a variety of tasks
  • Able to help edit and post articles
  • Able to help brainstorm and execute ideas with staff writers
  • Able to fill out bi-monthly writer evaluation sheets and return them to upper-level leadership
  • Ensure that writers produce an arrangement of articles on a daily basis that helps to reflect the Underground’s Brand
  • Able to commit daily to help ensure the success of the editorial team by guaranteeing the shape of the writing is concise
  • Has strong grammatical, syntactic, and character and plot development skills
  • Has strong research development skills
  • Must be willing to work on late, short, and tight deadlines

Additional expectations:

  • All interested applicants are encouraged to apply but priority will be given to journalism, public relations and english majors.

Social Media Manager (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Periscope)

As the Social Media Manager, a candidate must be able to work with all members of the Executive Board, especially the Head of Corporate Strategy, while also performing a variety of multi-media tasks. In addition, the Social Media Manager is responsible for the creation, curating, and managing of all published content associated with the Underground Brand. The Social Media Manager is also responsible for helping to develop and expand outreach efforts, oversee the design of social-media profiles, while also helping to ensure an open stream for cross promotions. This member must maintain a level of professionalism when properly communicating the Underground’s Brand.

  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student at University Park
  • Must submit a complicated application.

Other Criteria:

  • Has good organizational skills
  • Has good communication skills
  • Has the ability to create and manage published content (images, video, and written)
  • Able to conduct online advocacy with other organizational partners
  • Able to oversee the design of all social media platforms
  • Willing to work closely with the communication and marketing team to ensure that the Underground message is properly communicated
  • Able to develop and expand community and blogger outreach efforts within the Penn State community
  • Must be familiar with social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Slack or possess a willingness to learn

Graphic Designer

As a graphic designer, a candidate will be responsible for creating majority of the graphics on The Underground and our social media platforms. The candidate must be willing to work on short deadlines and provide graphic assistance on a weekly, and sometimes daily basis.

  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student at University Park
  • Must submit a complicated application

Other Criteria:

  • Has good organizational skills
  • Attention-to-detail
  • Able to work closely with other Communications, Marketing, and Graphic Design departments
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Should be familiar with graphic designing software such as InDesign and PhotoShop, or possess willingness to learn this software or possess a willingness to learn

Photographers/Videographers

Photographers and videographers should have in-depth knowledge of camera equipment and digital processing. They are talented, reliable, and routinely maintain camera equipment. Photographers are responsible for ensuring all photos are submitted with the necessary caption information.

  • Must be in good standing with the University
  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student at University Park
  • Must submit a complicated application

Other Criteria:

  • Has good organizational skills
  • Attention-to-detail
  • Able to handle a variety of tasks
  • Able to ensure that all photographs taken are professional while also ensuring that each photograph properly represents the Underground
  • Able to work with the marketing and graphic design teams in finding ways to increase positive publicity for the Underground
  • Managing all technical property of the Underground and ensuring that all cameras and software are protected
  • Must be willing to work on late, short, and tight deadlines

Marketing and Brand Ambassadors

The Marketing and Brand Ambassador division of the Underground is to bridge the organization with the Penn State community, State College Area and beyond. The Marketing and Brand Ambassadors  will brainstorm and execute ways to promote the Underground brand to recruit new members, establish ourselves as a media outlet on campus, and create relationships within Centre County.

  • Must be in good standing with the University
  • Must be a full-time undergraduate student at University Park
  • Must submit a complicated application

Other Criteria

  • Ability to work with the head of marketing
  • Creating marketing materials for social media
  • Compile and suggest items to give out during involvement fair
  • Creating plans of when and where to distribute information
  • Assist in establishing The Underground brand on campus
    • Find organizations, companies and clubs to place ads in RISE, the Underground’s semesterly e-magazine
