UC Berkeley Azaad wins 1st place at Infusion 2017
The University of California Berkeley Azaad won the 1st place trophy at the fifth annual Infusion dace competition, beating out eight other dance groups. The Hindi Film dance team was the only group to travel all the way from the west coast to present their theme, “The Waiting Room”. UCB Azaad is a team that strives to connect others with Bollywood culture through their entertainment and passionate dancing. Traveling nationwide has allowed them to share their combination of Indian classical, folk, and modern styles of dance to their audience.
Infusion is an intercollegiate dance competition in the Fusion/Hindi Film Dance circuit, allowing nine teams to compete against each other for a $3,000 cash prize. All the teams displayed different themes and different styles of dance including Bollywood, hip hop, bhangra, classical, and raas. Special musical guest, Mickey Singh, performed some of his latest hits during the event. Singh had privilege of reading the judge’s results and UNC Chalkaa came in second place and MIT Mirch received 3rd place. Pennn Masti took home the Best Mix award, UNC Chalkaa received the best theme award, and NCSU Nazare won the best costume award.
Infusion’s tech manager, Manan Garg, shared his thoughts during the show. “[The show] is great, we have a huge turnout, it’s going smoothly, no problems so far. Everyone is enjoying the dancing.” Garg and his partner manage the booth where they control the audio and video throughout the show. Garg is a freshman here at Penn State, majoring in biology pre-med.
