Valley Magazine Spring 2017 Launch Revealed Helen Maser as This Year’s Cover
Last Thursday, Valley Magazine, Penn State’s only student-run life and style magazine, held their spring 2017 launch party for their newest edition of the magazine at the Woskob Family Gallery. There were sponsored KIND bars, appetizers, and some palate cleansing drinks for all to enjoy. Everyone in attendance was dressed to the tee and excited for the big cover reveal. Who would be on the cover this semester? Each semester they release a magazine with a unique cover star chosen by the team. They pick their cover stars through a thorough nomination and interview process, eventually choosing the person with the most uplifting story. This semester, it was revealed that Helen Maser, a bachelor of the fine arts in painting and drawing at Penn State, would be on the cover. It was an exciting time, and the cover looks fantastic.
The Fall cover star Michael Grasso, was in attendance to congratulate Helen on the honor. I had a chance to talk to him about his experiences and how it felt to be honored by Valley Magazine. At first, he didn’t really know what he was doing when he went to his first interview. He was waiting and could hear other candidates talking as if they had rehearsed for hours, but he had nothing planned. He didn’t expect much to come of his interview.
Next thing he knew, he was picked and telling his story. After years of being harassed and bullied, Michael said that he had learned to embrace his inner-self. Through his experiences, he developed his art form and thrived in doing drag, as it was a wonderful outlet for his self-expression. The main thing that he wanted from his story being told on Valley Magazine was to help one person, change one person’s mind or outlook, just make a positive impact on anyone. He wants others to learn from his story. After graduating from Penn State, Michael will be attending the New School in New York City to continue his studies.
All in all, the launch party was a fun time with everyone looking their best and making great conversation. Be sure to get the spring 2017 issue as soon as it comes out to learn about Helen’s story and other things happening at Penn State! It will be released to the public in one week, and Valley Magazine will be in the HUB from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. giving out goodies to promote the magazine.
