Universal Spa Provided Information on Signs of Domestic Violence
The Beta Lambda Chapter of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc. held their Universal Spa event, focusing on identifying signs of domestic abuse in hair and nail salons at 7:15 P.M. in 103 BBH building.
The evening started with Karina Soto, Philanthropy Co-chair, starting those in attendance off with an ice breaker called the Self-Esteem Bubble, where personal strengths and achievements were written in the center, and pressures and negative things that tend lower people’s self esteems. After sharing, we learned that women who have low self esteems are more likely to be victims of domestic abuse.
The four main types of abuse were discussed next, verbal, emotional, physical, and sexual. From there, abuse statistics on college campuses were given and then two skits were performed.
The first skit showed how hair stylists usually discover that their client is being abused, while the second showed how nail technicians usually discover abuse. Because they feel more comfortable talking to their hair stylists, this allows them to pick up on signs of abuse.
It was then discussed that there is a new law in Illinois that requires those entering the cosmetology field to take a one hour long course to educated them on the signs of abuse.
The event overall was very informative and important that more people obtain this information. Karina Soto thought that “events like these are important for college students especially because they usually don’t notice the warning signs”.
Kimberly Valencia, Vice President and Treasurer of the sorority, said that ” college students usually don’t recognize abusive relationships. They think that because they’re in college, the struggle is worth it in the end.”
As a final takeaway from the event this evening, Francesgladys Puldio, president of the sorority, stressed the importance of ” taking advantage of the on campus resources because there may come a time when it is vital for students to know the signs of domestic abuse, which is why the Center for Women Resources exists”.
Be sure to come out the rest of the events the Beta Lambda chapter is hosting for their philanthropy week. The next event is ‘My Boobies, Not Yours’ and will be held in 110 Thomas at 7:15 P.M.
