Momotarō Sweetens Up State College
Momotarō is the newest sensation to sweeten up State College. Although the Thai ice cream spot opened this past May, Momotarō quickly took over the summer, and it is easy to see why.
Dessert lovers will love this fun, new twist to ice cream. Originating from Thailand, Momotarō brings us the rolled ice cream trend that owner Bo Liu says is the “new thing that is taking over.” For $8, customers choose one base, one mix-in flavor, toppings and drizzled sauces (with additional flavors and toppings being $0.50 each) which all turn into a far too pretty to eat treat by the end.
So, how does it work? First, pick your ice cream base, choosing between flavors such as original yogurt and green tea matcha (see store menu for flavors of the month). Step two: select your mix-in flavor. Some options include strawberry, mango, banana, ginger, Oreo, M&M candy, lemon, kiwi and raspberry. Step three: toppings. Choose from almonds, fruits, chocolate chips, Oreo cookies, honey roasted peanuts and more to top it off. Seal the deal with step four: a drizzle of sauces. Finally, watch as rolled ice cream experts turn your ingredients into a cup of deliciousness.
Deciding on what to get is the hardest part. If concocting your own ice cream creation isn’t your thing, Momotarō offers more elaborate desserts including dessert bowls, cheesecakes, cakes, tarts and macaroons to name just a few.
When a famous creamery sits on your own campus, many might ask why they should make the journey downtown to Momotarō.
“We serve more than just ice cream and our environment is different,” says Bo Liu. The inside is just as creative as what is on the menu. Momotarō stands out with its heavily decorated walls lined with mugs and sketches. There’s simply nowhere else like it here in State College.
“Momotarō is a trendy place and we serve many culturally inspired treats: whether it’s our bubble tea from Taiwan, rolled ice-cream from Thailand, mochi ice cream from Japan, cheesecakes from France, or our coffees from Bucks County PA,”
With its eye-catching logo, a peach inspired by the “Peach Boy” Japanese folklore character, Momotarō looks to satisfy all customers who want to indulge in the new craze.
Momotarō is located on 220 W. College Avenue in the plaza alongside Five Guys and Chronic Town. They are open 8:00 AM – 10:00PM Monday through Thursday, 8:00AM – 11:00PM Friday, 11:00AM – 11:00PM Saturday and 11:00AM – 10:00PM Sunday.
