It’s October, which means it’s time to get scary! Halloween is almost here, so if you’re not trick or treating to get free candy, curl up in bed and watch these five movies to get you in the spooky mood. From cult classics to psychological horrors, here are the five horror movies to watch this Halloween season.
An unsettling movie loosely based on a scary true story, this horror classic is about a young girl named Regan who becomes possessed by a demon. Her mother seeks medical attention which can’t explain her daughter’s odd behavior. A local priest contacts the church, asking permission to perform an exorcism on the girl. They send over an expert to assist and the two priests must face the devil himself in order to free Regan and her mother from this supernatural evil.
Such a classic just needs to be watched this Halloween. It is a film surrounded with rumors, one famous rumor being that the set of the film is cursed.
A young woman who is deaf comes face to face with a killer who plays a deadly cat-and-mouse game with her. This is an indie thriller that will have you at the edge of your seat. The film is executed brilliantly. From every moment the suspense is heightened, and the two lead actors deliver their roles well. Stephen King, the master of horror, even tweeted about the film saying “How good is Hush? Up there with Halloween and, even more, Wait Until Dark. White knuckle time. On Netflix.”
Vegetarian, Justine, is desperate to fit in at her veterinary school, so she strays from her principles and eats raw meat which leads her down a dangerous path as her true self begins to emerge.
A powerful, coming of age film with a horror twist to it. The film received critical acclaim in France and is now on Netflix. Have a strong stomach, though, because “Raw” can get intense due to the graphic themes in it.
Based upon the short film by Mike Flanagan, “Oculus: Chapter 3 — The Man with the Plan,” “Oculus” deals with a young woman who is convinced that a mirror is responsible for her parents’ death. She and her brother try to put the mirror to the test, locking themselves in a house with it. But as the night goes on, the siblings are finding it harder and harder to distinguish what is real and what is not.
A smart and scary film, “Oculus” will not disappoint. The acting is decent and viewers will be able to get lost in this psychological horror.
The Conjuring 2
Far scarier than its predecessor, “The Conjuring 2” is a terrifying movie based off terrifying events that occurred in England. The film follows Ed and Lorraine Warren as the couple travel to England to help the Hodgson family, who are afflicted with a poltergeist at their Enfield council house. A spine-tingling ghost story known for its jump scares and unsettling cast of ghosts, this film is definitely one to watch this Halloween.
