Macklemore – “Good Old Days (feat. Kesha)”

I can never make my mind up about Macklemore. On the one hand, he’s just a passionate dude who loves spreading a good message and making fun pop music. On the other hand, he’s a bit of a trend-hopper who makes some pretty cheesy rap. I think “Good Old Days” leans more toward the latter. Kesha’s here, delivering a big pop chorus, while Macklemore raps about living in the moment over a standard pop beat. Message aside, it feels a little too much like the kind of pseudo-inspiring pop song that strays a little too far into radio appeal. Macklemore’s “Gemini” is out now if you’d like to hear more.

Moses Sumney – “Make Out in My Car”

Moses Sumney is making some of America’s most fascinating alternative music out right now. His new song “Make Out in My Car” is no exception. Over a simple bass drum and finger click, Sumney builds and weaves layers of vocals and instruments into one another. It’s his schtick at this point, but boy is he good at it. A supremely talented, unique vocalist, Sumney just continues to get better and better. I’m excited to hear what he does in the future. His new album “Aromanticism” is out now.

The Society for Indian Music and Arts is presenting Virasat 2017 this weekend from September 22nd to September 24th. Virasat is a three-day conference that aims to bring traditional Indian music, research presentations, and musical performances to students of all cultures at Penn State and in State College. Musical guests performances are featured by vocalists Priya Purushothaman and violinists Raman Iyer.

Gitanjali Bhushan, secretary for the Society for Indian Music and Arts (SIMA), is in charge of spreading awareness to the Penn State and State College communities about the classical Indian music on campus. In addition to her efforts in making this weekend’s conference run smoothly, she says, “We hope that this conference will allow people to understand the depth of Indian classical music and dance.”

In terms of how Virasat 2017 will impact the Penn State and SCE communities, Bhushan says, “I believe that Virasat and the Society for Indian Music and Arts gives the PSU and SCE community a perspective on classical Indian music by providing classes, workshops, and concerts for everyone. SIMA fosters awareness for South Asian performing arts and welcomes everyone to participate in activities. This gives the audience the opportunity to experience the art forms live, and by using this experience to further inform their artistic and critical thinking.”

Day-wise tickets for Virasat cost $4 for Penn State students and $4.99 for the general public. All events are to be held in the HUB, and additional information and the full schedule can be found on their Facebook event page.
